The current coronavirus testing strategy will be maintained in the coming months. This means that there will continue to be five free PCR tests per month.
This was assured by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) on Friday. Vienna’s health councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) promptly expressed skepticism about whether this would be enough.
Corona testing strategy: continue five free tests per month.
“This will remain the case,” Rauch stressed in a joint press conference with Hacker at the meeting of provincial social advisors in Vienna. The minister pointed out that Austria was setting an international example with this testing strategy.
Vienna’s Hacker wants unlimited corona testing.
“We are not one hundred percent in agreement on this; that is no secret,” Hacker, on the other hand, referred to the differences surrounding this strategy. Vienna had unsuccessfully expressed the wish that the gargle testing system established in the city could continue to be made available to the population without restriction and free of charge.
However, he was sure that this would be discussed again in the fall, the city councilor said. That’s because the Corona numbers are expected to “snap up,” he said.
There was unanimity on the Corona vaccination issue. Rauch and Hacker stressed the importance of the booster. In the foreseeable future, the vaccine effective against the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 should also be available. Rauch expects it to arrive in the coming weeks.
First, Omicron vaccines were injected in Vienna.
Hacker pointed out that the first vaccinations with the agent adapted to the Omicron variant will be carried out in Vienna starting today. These are the vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna, which target the Omicron subvariant BA.1. Those wishing to be vaccinated can choose to receive the Omicron vaccine at the vaccination centers in Vienna.
